March 20, 2007 – Brockport Fire Department
39 North Main Street – Structure Fire
At approximately 1:40 PM on Tuesday, March 20, 2007, the Brockport Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire on North Main Street, at the corner of Clark Street, in the Village. Heavy smoke was showing from a large commercial building housing an auto parts store and a large, open garage area to the rear of the parts store.
Pumper 233 was first on the scene and laid a supply line past the building to the south side of the structure on Clark Street where it supplied three hand lines. Ladder 231 pulled into a driveway on the north side of the building and raised its ladder for roof operations on the north-west side of the structure. Pumper 2325 took the same hydrant and operated two hand lines from the east side of the structure. Pumper 232 and Hamlin’s Pumper 243, responding on mutual assistance, provided manpower and equipment, along with Rescue 238. A Holley pumper was also requested to respond to the scene to fill-out manpower requirements. Fill-in pumpers were provided by Spencerport and Bergen.
The fire was concentrated in the garage area and firefighting was hampered by fire that had extended into a large motor home within the structure. The fire was hot enough that one roof beam, directly over the motor home, stretched to approximately four inches off its center line. The fire was quickly knocked down once large overhead doors could be raised to allow stream penetration. Extension into the parts store was checked and only a small area showed any damage from extension. Several fans were deployed to remove the smoke from the store and tarps were placed to minimize water damage.
The fire was placed under control at 2:57 PM and the last unit left the scene at 4:30 PM. The cause of the fire has not been determined. Occupants were in the building when the fire was discovered working on two wave runners in preparation for a trip to Florida.
