Orleans County received a report of a structure fire at 1947 County Line Road in the Morton Fire District at 10:06 PM on December 4, 2006 and dispatched a mutual assistance pumper tanker and a rescue from Kendall and a rescue from Holley, while at the same time, notifying Monroe County to page out Morton. Chief Kenneth Kearns, of the Morton Fire Department, hearing the alarm on the Orleans County frequency, immediately responded and reported a working fire, wires arching on the number 2 side of the building and all occupants out of the building and accounted for. The Chief also requested a pumper from Hamlin to the scene and assigned Assistant Chief Gary Zinsmeister as Operations.
The Kendall pumper tanker arrived at the scene, took a hydrant just past the involved structure and advanced one line to the number 2 side of the burning building. The Kendall hose team was directed by command to not operate due to the arching wires where the fire was most intense. The hose team relocated to the number 4 side of the structure and advanced the line into the building initiating an interior attack. Hamlin hit a plug, laid a 5 inch line to the front of the structure and advanced a second line into the building. Crews from Morton, Kendall and Hamlin continued interior operations, opening up and wetting down remaining hot spots. Holley staged as the RIT assignment.
Once fire suppression was completed, the Orleans County Fire investigation Team determined the cause of the fire to be a faulty flue that ignited the exterior number 2 side of the structure. The fire then spread up the exterior wall into the attic and extended into upper floor bedrooms. The building sustained heavy damage and was inhabitable.
All companies participated in overhaul operations. Mutual assistance and mutual aid companies returned to service beginning at approximately 12:30 AM the next morning with Morton fully returning to service at 1:40 AM.
