Fatal MVA:
Point Pleasant and Ridge Culver Firefighters responded for a mva yesterday on Rt. 590. 1C11 reported a major power outage in the area while enroute and confirmed a singe car MVA. One person was taken to the hospital with injuries and there was one fatality at the scene. The car severed the pole in two and then smashed through a fence along the expressway. New Delivery:

Water Problem:
The Lodge at Woodcliff in Perinton has some repair work to do after a water problem there early Thursday morning. Bushnell's Basin firefighters say a valve ruptured on a fourth floor hot water tank around 3 a.m. It dumped 300 to 400 gallons of water, which caused significant damage to the floors below before ending up in the basement. Working Fire:
At approximately 1:30 AM, on December 23, 2006, home owners at 4451 Monroe County Line Road awakened to a loud popping noise in their home. Upon investigation, they discovered a ball of fire coming from the breaker box in the basement and dialed 911. Full Story. (Updated December 24, 6:30 AM)

New Firehouses:
As chief of the Webster Fire Department, Sabin works out of a firehouse that is crammed with beams to support the roof. "The building has been taking a beating over the years," he said. "We've been told by structural engineers that if we got a heavy snowfall, the roof could come down." The roof did come down on one of Spencerport's firehouses. Honeoye Falls Gets Grant:
The Honeoye Falls Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a $104,500 federal grant from the Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The money is a 5 percent matching grant, which means the village of Honeoye Falls will have to set aside $5,500 of its own funds, to boost the total funding for the fire department to $110,000. Fatal MVA:

Fire District Elections:
Area residents have the chance to choose their fire commissioners on Tuesday. Each fire district has five commissioners who serve five-year terms. Not all of them are up for re-election this year and some candidates are running to finish out terms for people who have had to leave their posts, making their terms shorter. Orleans County received a report of a structure fire at 1947 County Line Road in the Morton Fire District at 10:06 PM on December 4, 2006 and dispatched a mutual assistance pumper tanker and a rescue from Kendall and a rescue from Holley, while at the same time, notifying Monroe County to page out Morton. Off Duty Firefighter Shot:
Police in Irondequoit are looking into the shooting Tuesday night of an off-duty Rochester firefighter. It happened around 9:30 p.m. on Portland Court, off Portland Avenue. MVA People Trapped:

Firefighter Funeral:
It is with great sadness we announce the death of Joseph C. Kujawa, Jr. Joe passed away on Friday, November 24th at the age of  77.
54 year member of the West Webster Fire Dept. Lifetime member, past Line Officer; past Chief and Commissioner of West Webster Volunteer Fire Department. Local contractor and farmer for over 60 years. Joe will be greatly missed by all.  Funeral Services were 10:00 AM Wednesday at the United Church of Christ, Congregational, 570 Klem Road, Webster. Interment, Webster Union Cemetery followed.

Rochester Firefighters responded for a house fire late tonight on Bay St. Quint 7 was on location with heavy smoke and fire from a 2 1/2. Quint 7 further reported people trapped on the second floor and they were going to attempt a rescue. Engine 16 was the Extra Unit while Quint & Midi 9 were special called to assist. The Hamlin Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire on November 28, 2006, at 5:34 PM, the reported address at 265 Bankside Drive in the Hidden Creek Mobile Home Park. New Helicopter:
Mercy Flight Central had an extra special Thanksgiving thanks to the arrival of its new, state-of-the-art helicopter. The helicopter was flown from Texas and arrived safe and sound at the non-profit’s Brickyard Road base. On Friday, crews had already started giving it a good once-over and started training. Hamlin Firefighters responded for a house fire last night on Hidden Creek Lane. Command reported a fire on the outside of the house near the chimney. Working Fire:
Fairport Firefighters responded for a warehouse fire yesterday on Parce Ave. 3C-24 was on location within minutes and reported smoke from the building. This address is a portion of the old American Can Company on Parce avenue.  The entire structure is about 1,000' long and in places four stories tall.  Two engines and a quint from East Rochester, an engine from Penfield for the F.A.S.T. team as well as an engine from Bushnells Basin. Rescues from Basin, Egypt and Penfield were called to the scene due to the size of the building. Egypt, Webster and Pittsford filled into Fairports two stations.  This is the third fire in this portion of the building in eight months. (Updated November 19 12:30 PM)

Spencerport Relocates Firehouse:
The Spencerport Fire Department is moving into a new temporary home, after fire destroyed its Lyell Avenue firehouse in August.
The main firehouse, for now, will be in the former Frontier Communications building behind 27 West Ave. Firefighters had been working out of the village's Department of Public Works building, at 191 S. Farm Accident:
Spencerport Firefighters responded for a man trapped in a potato picker yesterday in a field behind Spencerport High School. Command confirmed a man trapped in a machine. Brockport Firefighters Receive Unit Commendation:
At the Sixth Annual Recognition Dinner held by the Monroe County Fire Chiefs Association, the Brockport Fire Department received the unit commendation award for their combined efforts to save lives and reduce the ravages of fire when the home at 42 High Street in the Village of Brockport was reported on fire on May 16, 2006.

Brockport Fire Chief Laurence Vaughan was accompanied by Deputy Chief Timothy Rombaut, Assistant Chief Scott Smith and Battalion Chief James Toole when he accepted the award from County Executive Maggie Brooks at Logan's on Scottsville Road.  Brooks had nothing but high praise and appreciation for all the award recipients as she presented them to those selected.  Over three hundred and fifty people were in attendance to share in the excitement and camaraderie as both County and City Fire Departments were recognized for their actions and efforts during the past year. Kleen Brite Fire:
On Saturday, September 9, 2006, a major fire at the Kleen Brite facility in Brockport prompted a response from 400 firefighters, 19 area and regional fire departments and ambulance squads. Without the investment made by the Water Authority in renewals and improvements to the water supply infrastructure, the fire flows needed to combat such an occurrence would have fallen short of the community’s firefighting needs. Working Fire:
Point Pleasant Firefighters responded for a house fire early this morning on Seneca Rd. First in units found heavy fire on two sides of a structure that fronts Irondequoit Bay. Firefighters had to carry equipment down 118 steps to the house as there was no driveway. Mutual aid was provided by Sea breeze (1 engine) St. Paul (FAST team) and West Webster (2 boats, 1 that assisted with attack from the water front)  and Ridge Culver stood by in quarters to cover the district.  The fire was called under control in about 25 minutes. Extrication Competition:

The Chili Fire Department was the overall winner of this past weekends extrication challenge in Hacketsown New Jersey. Chili and Bushnell's Basin were among teams from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. Chili took first place in the limited pit, third place in the unlimited pit and first place overall along with winning the tool innovation award. Chili will be competing in three weeks at the international Extrication Competition in Burlington Canada. There they will be competing against teams from Canada, USA and Europe. Gates Fire to Improve Response Time:

The national standard is to have a fire truck on the scene within four minutes of an emergency call. The Gates-Chili Fire Department is hitting that goal only about 75 percent of the time, Fire Chief Jim Harrington said. Spencerport Fire to Rebuild:
Spencerport's fire chief says the plan is to rebuild. A fire destroyed the department’s headquarters on Lyell Avenue Friday. While firefighters saved nearly $3-million dollars worth of equipment it lost about 40 sets of turnout gear. A vendor was at a department meeting Sunday to measure firefighters for new gear. Rescue 11 Gets a Visit:
Rochester's Rescue Company 11 had a very special visitor this weekend. Six-year-old Alexyss DeWind and her family came in from Wayne County bearing gifts.It was the first time the firefighters and the DeWinds had seen each other since the rescue team pulled Alexyss from a drain pipe at Fair Haven Beach State Park in Cayuga County three weeks ago. Safety Day:

Several public safety organizations joined together to provide a wide variety of information and experiences for "Safety Day" at the Hamlin Firemen's Carnival. The Monroe County Sheriff's Department made child ID's for over 150 kids, the New York State Police had the crash simulator. Monroe County 911 brought a simulator that allowed children to practice an emergency call. The New York State Park Police brought information about safe boating and camping. A new organization called Firemen United for Safety Education (FUSE) brought two fire safety trailers, "Sparky" the fire dog, an interactive robot and a dozen firefighters from six departments who are experienced in providing safety education. The idea of a "mutual assistance for fire prevention" organization has grown tremendously since it was created this spring. Canandaigua Might Lose Fire Contract:
The town may decide Tuesday to go it alone and provide its own fire protection instead of renewing its contract with the city's fire department. Supervisor Lloyd Kinnear has told the city that the town would consider accepting a five-year, $2.5 million contract. That way, he wouldn't have to negotiate each year. But the city has not yet accepted those terms. Kinnear said it countered with a figure of $3.95 million for five years. The current contract expires in January. Full Story, Blog. Heavy Rain:

Rochester received almost three inches of rain today. Numerous Fire Departments were out pumping basements and handling other storm related calls. There was a partial roof collapse in Ridge Culver, a tree down on a garage in Spencerport and Rochester responded for a mini van stuck in water under a bridge with people inside just to name a few. Harold "Bud" Phillips, chief of the Ridge Road Fire District, has received the "Career Chief of the Year" award from the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs. Working Fire:

The Hamlin Fire Department was notified of a structure fire this afternoon on Curtisdale La. Engine 243 arrived on scene with smoke and flames shooting out of the upstairs window of the split level ranch. The firefighters aggressively attacked the fire using class A foam, which quickly snuffed the fire. The crew of Engine 242 vented the roof while Rescue 248 provided a crew for salvage, overhaul and rehabilitation. Morton and Walker Fire Departments stood-by at Hamlin Station #1. Emergency Workers Head to the Flood Zone:

Brockport FD Receives Grant:
Brockport Firefighters seem to be in the right place at the right time this month. SUNY Brockport announced they had secured funds totaling Five Thousand dollars for technology upgrades and the Associates at the Brockport Wal-Mart added One Thousand Dollars of their “Support the Community” funds to enable the department to continue with computer upgrades and enhancements that will allow them to maintain appropriate records while improving the computerized training aides in the Department’s Training facility. At 4:30 AM the early Morning house fire at 830 Klem Road brought out West Webster, NY and Webster fire dept's.  Command reported a two story wood frame with heavy smoke and fire from the rear of the house. Brockport Receives New Ambulance:

The Village of Brockport recently authorized the purchase of a replacement ambulance for 2339, the third and oldest ambulance in the fleet. The new ambulance is a Horton Type III ambulance on a Ford chassis and will replace the 1996 ambulance of similar design. The Type III refers to how the box sits on the chassis and with a Type III, there is a walk-thru or passage from the front cab of the ambulance to the rear area which allows for ease of crew mobility as well as family members that may ride along when the patient needs a parent or guardian. This was a pretty interesting two day event that was held at the Chili Fire Department. They had two extrication areas where one side is Hydraulic tools and Dummy victims while the other side is only hand tools and live victims. All teams had to compete on both sides. There were two Rescues from the Canal on Thursday. A man jumped into the water to rescue a woman after she drove her car into the canal. Later that day while Sheriffs deputies where attaching a cable to the car one of the divers got in trouble with his weight belt requiring two police officers to jump into the water to rescue him. Informational Meeting:

There will be an informational meeting for those interested in joining the Brighton Fire Department Bunker Program on Saturday, May 20 at 8:30 am at Brighton Station 1 (3100 East Avenue).  To be eligible for the program, a person must be a full-time matriculated student at an area college and have (at minimum) completed Firefighting Essentials or New York State Firefighter I.  Those attending are asked to bring copies of training records from their home department and/or copies of training certificates received from New York State. Auto X 2006 Extrication Competition:

Chili Fire Department is hosting Auto X 2006 Extrication comp. June 3rd. - 4th. There are Still have a few openings for teams to compete. New Fire Chief:

The Henrietta Board of Fire Commissioners approved a motion on Tuesday to appoint James Comstock as the first career Chief of the Henrietta Fire District. This will take affect on June 1. Current District Chief Rick Tracy will stay on until July 1, 2006 for a transition period. Chief Comstock has been with the HFD since 1977 first as a volunteer, and then was hired by the Fire District in May, 1984. (Updated May 13, 7:46 AM)

It was a bone-chilling night in February when Lincoln Volunteer Firefighter James Gallaher was struck by a hit and run driver while directing traffic at an accident scene in Walworth. Porch Fire:

East Rochester Firefighters responded for a house fire today on West Chestnut St. The DPW crew was working further down the block patching potholes when they noticed smoke coming from the front door of a house.  They called 911, then entered the house, removed the two residents that were still inside, and quickly extinguished a fire burning behind the siding of the porch.  By the time ERFD arrived on scene, the fire was knocked down. BFD Bunker Program:
There will be an informational meeting for those interested in joining the Brighton Fire Department Bunker Program on Saturday, May 20 at 8:30 am at Brighton Station 1 (3100 East Avenue).  To be eligible for the program, a person must be a full-time matriculated student at an area college and have (at minimum) completed Firefighting Essentials or New York State Firefighter I.  Those attending are asked to bring copies of training records from their home department and/or copies of training certificates received from New York State. Egypt 338 ReFerb:

With the help of Churchville Fire Equipment, Egypt FD just completed a compartment restructuring project on Rescue 338. The project consisted of replacing the current Hurst tools with (1) MOC 2 Cutter & (1) Defender Spreader which are now both pre-connected to 100' reels. Gates Firefighters responded for a house fire this afternoon on Chili Ave. Command reported a working fire. Rochester, Chili and Henrietta responded as fill in companies.

Rochester Firefighters responded for smoke in the house last night on Wilmont St. Quint 7 reported a fire in a front bedroom. Dispatch.

Pittsford Firefighters responded for a house fire early this morning on Church St. Command reported a working fire. East Rochester responded to the scene while Brighton and Mendon provided fill in companies. Dispatch. (Updated April 9, 7:56 AM)

Working Fire:

Brockport Firefighters responded for a house fire tonight on Redmond Rd. 2C33 was on location with smoke from the attic of a 2 1/2.Morton sent an Engine and Rescue to the scene. Hamlin and Spencerport provided fill in companies. The fire was under control in about an hour with extensive damage to the second floor and roof.

Rochester Firefighters responded tonight for a mva on Brown St. Quint 8 was on location with a person trapped. Unfortunately the person on the motorcycle died at the scene. Dispatch.
